If you want to make the majority of people in a company or organization tasked with executing change swear in their minds tell them: “Hey! Have we got a great new vision for you, with a killer mission, built upon values you will love that will transform our culture overnight and catapult us towards our goals!”
Those five words – vision, mission, values, culture, goals –more often come from people at or near the top who don’t have to worry about not having a job in six months, or if they don’t have a sweet parachute to cushion their fall. They rarely come from the people who will need to execute these grand notions. Heck, 80 % of people don’t even know the difference between vision and mission.
In the past year, we had the epiphany that when you lose people at hello instead of having them at hello, the disconnect down the line is as wide as how the one degree of instrument failure caused Amelia Earhart’s death.
For any strategy to work it needs to speak to and with the people who will carry it out. It’s needs to generate from them, “Wow! You got where I’m coming from, you came up with something that makes sense, feels right and is doable by mere mortals like me, and you even have a plan where I can quickly learn the necessary skill sets when my present ones are inadequate. Where do I sign up?”
